Dance review: Stories in the steps at UW’s ‘Latitudes’
"Most striking among the first act pieces is Marlene Skog’s “Village,” danced with a rush of intensity to Carol Carlson’s electric violin, which lends a kind of modern gypsy feel. Rolling shoulders and hip thrusts contrast more elegant movement, as if a prequel of the club scene coming later."

UW Dance celebrates its upgrade to a department with the accomplished ‘Upswing’
"Marlene Skog reworked the iconic "Dying Swan," and composer and violinist Carol Carlson reworked Saint-Saens haunting "Le Cygne" to create "The Swan," a starker pas de deux for Mary Kate McLaughlin and Dan Jackson. McLaughlin's dramatic entrance in point shoes and black tutu seemed to excite the audience. She is a capable ballet dancer and Jackson, a chivalrous partner, but the piece, aside from looking smart (behind the dancers hung two black and white panels from Dale Mainer), doesn't really bring anything new to the table. However, for a few moments when McLaughlin rolled in a line, her tutu flattened and crunched beneath her, all was forgiven."

'Upswing' celebrates the conflicts and collisions of youth
"The penultimate work was Marlene Skog's new duet, "The Swan." Mary Kate McLaughlin in a black tutu strewn with swan feathers looked at once lovely and fragile. She spun, then seemed to lose control, pushing away her partner, Dan Jackson, or collapsing on the floor. His steadiness was a foil for her agitation. Carol Carlson's dark violin backdrop, adapted from Saint-Saens' "Le Cygne," gave the piece a driving, ominous feel."
